Building Bitcoin’s Payment Layer: An interview with Moritz on creating Alby

In an interview with Bitcoin News, Moritz, co-founder of Alby shared a compelling vision about the future of bitcoin on the web and how Alby is leading that transformation.
Moritz together with the whole Alby team are working every day to make bitcoin more usable and intuitive for everyday users and developers. What began as a browser extension has evolved into a modular toolkit for bitcoin payments and app development. Motivated by the desire to make bitcoin transactions as seamless as sending information online, Alby helps address the impracticality of bitcoin’s slow on-chain transactions by using lightning for instant, low-fee settlements.
Our products include Alby Hub (a self-custodial wallet), the Alby Browser Extension, Alby Go mobile app and SDKs/APIs, all of which are modular and interoperable thanks to NWC (Nostr Wallet Connect). Developers can integrate bitcoin payment features without locking into a proprietary system.
Moritz acknowledges lightning’s complexity but emphasizes Alby’s user-first approach to simplify the experience, eliminating friction like QR codes or copy-paste processes. The goal is to make bitcoin payments feel as seamless as using the internet.
At Alby we also explore future-forward use cases, including AI agents making micropayments and support for protocols like Cashu, Ark or Spark. Our no-code tool LNFly lets users create bitcoin apps easily, helping democratize access to bitcoin payment development.
Community is central to our growth. Moritz emphasizes that user feedback and contributions have been key to Alby’s growth and success.
Ultimately, Alby’s mission is to empower developers to build on bitcoin and everyday users to make bitcoin payments without barriers while staying true to bitcoin’s ethos of decentralized P2P payments.
